Evolution of the Project

Version 1: Initial Design

Key Objectives

  • 1. Create a barbell clip that takes the forces from the plates trying to push on the clip and divert them to making the clip stay on the bar better
  • 2. Use arm-like stabilizers to distribute the forces put on the clip by the plates
  • 3. When the force is put on the clip use it to hold onto the bar tighter

Design Highlights

  • 1. Arms were used to distribute force loads
  • 2. All arms were made to be replaceable without having to replace the whole clip
  • 3. There was no need for any additional components then screws for installation

Challenges

  • 1. The clip's arms caused it to move away from the bar, worsening performance due to increased leverage from the plates.
  • 2. Maintaining a secure grip on the barbell under varying loads
  • 3. Balancing durability with ease of use and quick installation

Version 2: Improved Design

Solutions Implemented

  • 1. Replaced arm design with a clasp and wedge mechanism
  • 2. Utilized the plate's hole to create a wedging effect
  • 3. Ensured that plate movement increases the clip's grip on the barbell

Results Achieved

  • 1. Achieved a secure grip on the barbell under all conditions
  • 2. Eliminated horizontal slippage during high load drops
  • 3. Enhanced overall safety and performance for athletes

Challenges

  • 1. Ensuring the clasp and wedge mechanism could withstand repeated high-impact drops without failure.
  • 2. Balancing the need for a secure grip with ease of use and quick release functionality.
  • 3. Maintaining durability and performance across a wide range of barbell and plate types.

Version 3: Final Design

Key Objectives

  • 1. Enhanced grip with high-friction rubber material
  • 2. Ergonomically optimized clasp and clip design
  • 3. Streamlined assembly process for quicker setup

Design Highlights

  • Utilized high-friction baseball tape to ensure no slippage
  • Integrated clasp into the body of the clip for seamless functionality
  • Incorporated a high-strength wedge design for enhanced stability

Why It Stands Out

This project stands out due to its innovative design and engineering solutions that address the common issues faced with traditional barbell clips. The use of a patent-pending wedge mechanism ensures a secure grip on the barbell, preventing horizontal slippage and enhancing safety during high-impact drops. The clip's construction from premium materials guarantees durability and long-lasting performance. Additionally, the ergonomic design and ease of use make it accessible for athletes of all levels, providing a reliable and efficient solution for maintaining barbell stability.
